Stone: Inside Out Opens October 10 at GREY Matter Gallery During Belltown Art Walk

GREY Architecture announces Stone: Inside Out, a solo exhibition by Seattle artist and musician John Gilbreath, opening Friday, October 10 from 6-9pm at GREY Matter, the firm's gallery space at 1423 Western Avenue. The exhibition runs through November 7, 2025, coinciding with October's Belltown Art Walk. After three decades working in Seattle's music community—where sound vanishes almost as quickly as it appears—Gilbreath has found profound counterbalance in stone carving, a medium defined by ancient permanence. His work explores the paradox between stone's timeless stillness and the loud, violent, and messy reality of sculpting it. "In contrast to the great stillness and permanence of natural stone, the process of creating sculpture from the material, to essentially alter its long trajectory through time, can be a loud, violent, messy, and frustrating experience," Gilbreath reflects. "I've come to love that process as much as the finished product." Working primarily with dense, dark stones like basalt and granite, Gilbreath creates pieces that reveal stark contrasts between natural, weathered surfaces and highly polished interiors. His sculptures don't merely celebrate stone's beauty—they expose the tension between material and maker, permanence and transformation. The exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the practice of an artist who has quietly built a significant body of work while contributing to Seattle's creative community across multiple disciplines. For Gilbreath, stone carving provides "a deeper, more tangible and satisfying ballast" for his creative life. GREY Matter is GREY Architecture's commitment to fostering dialogue between architecture, art, and craft. The gallery provides emerging and established artists with space to showcase work that explores materiality, process, and place.
