St. Mary's Art Center, a non-profit organization located in the former 1876 St. Mary Louise Hospital in historic Virginia City, is hosting its 60th Anniversary Celebration and Spring Art Reception on May 18, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event includes live music by Phil Prunier, light refreshments, a new art exhibit by local artist Pam Brekas, and access to all seven art galleries spanning across four floors.
“This is an incredibly well-received exhibition by Pam Brekas and a great compliment to our permanent art collection and property,” A. Perry, Executive Director of St. Mary's Art Center, said. “Our art receptions are always a grand time, but this year will be extra special as we celebrate the 2024 season and connect with our members, and other art and history lovers.”
The “Absolutely Abstracts” exhibit by Brekas showcases abstract work full of color, layers, texture, and movement. Brekas has a long history with the art center, including artist retreats and collaborative pieces hung in their permanent collection.
Other exhibits include a Historical Museum Exhibition and Artisan Gallery, Northern Nevada Artists and Themes, part of their permanent collection, and Virginia City Characters and Town by artist Danette Steele. Experience a diverse showcase of Comstock Art and learn the rich history of the 1876 former hospital.
“This is a tremendous milestone for St. Mary’s Art Center, celebrating our 60th anniversary, including incredible art, programs, and the many improvements to this historic 148-year-old property, including the newly redesigned beautiful front grounds,” Perry said. “ We look forward to sharing this beautiful celebration and time in the art center’s history with the community.”
St. Mary’s Art Center was founded in 1964 by Father Paul Meinecke and other local artists after the building closed its doors as a hospital in 1942 and sat vacant for 22 years. St. Mary’s Art Center is the longest-operating 501(c) 3 nonprofit in Storey County.
