The Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh (COP) performs Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 and Ruth Crawford’s “Andante for Strings,” and proudly welcomes the winners of its 2024-25 Youth Concerto Competition in a concert on Saturday, April 5, 7:30pm at Levy Hall of Rodef Shalom.
The COP Youth Concerto Competition for this season features emerging artists in string instruments. The winner of the senior division (ages 19-25), violinist Joshua Lee of Carnegie Mellon University, will perform Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4 (1st mvt.). The winner of the Junior division (ages 18 and under), cellist Charles Hahl of Fox Chapel High School, will perform the Cello Concerto No. 1 (1st mvt.) by Saint-Saëns.
Along with the competition winners, COP will perform a work by 20th-century composer Ruth Crawford, her “Andante for Strings,” a piece that began as a movement within a string quartet and evolved to be a celebrated piece for string orchestra. The program concludes with one of the great masterpieces in classical music, Mendelssohn’s “Italian” Symphony.
“This program brings together so many wonderful elements: the celebration of emerging artists in our young soloists, the elevation of an under-appreciated marvel in the Crawford piece, and Mendelssohn’s much-loved Italian Symphony,” says Artistic Director and Conductor Edward Leonard. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the program, and I am looking forward to giving a stage to these great young musicians.”
