The Alden Kindred of America is pleased to announce the honorees for the 19th Speak for Thyself Awards, which celebrate women who embody the courage and spirit of Mayflower passenger Priscilla Mullins Alden.
This year’s event spotlights two remarkable artists and community leaders: Marie Fox Young of Duxbury and Karen Rinaldo of Falmouth. Their creative achievements and leadership have enriched communities across the South Shore and Cape Cod. The event will also recognize Lucy Tamburo of Marshfield, recipient of the Aspiring Priscilla Award for her contributions to public history.
A Duxbury native, Marie Fox Young has built a distinguished career in the fine arts. She is widely known for her beloved folk art, including the iconic Duxbury 350th anniversary poster featuring the Alden House, and for national commissions such as "Lighting the National Christmas Tree" for the White House. Her later portrayals of women reveal strength, character, and emotional depth. Equally notable is her service to the community: she has donated artwork for scholarships, gifted rights to her painting "Chasing Fireflies" to the Duxbury Rural & Historical Society, and led the successful effort to return the 1793 Rufus Hathaway portrait of Ezra Weston II (“King Caesar”) to Duxbury.
Karen Rinaldo, inspired by growing up in a pre‐Revolutionary homestead filled with stories of George Washington, has devoted her life to art and history. Her work as a visual historian includes the nationally acclaimed "The First Thanksgiving, 1621," a research‐based depiction of the Pilgrim–Wampanoag harvest gathering now displayed at Pilgrim Hall museum. Karen’s runs her own gallery, co‐authored "In the Wake of the Mayflower" with Kevin Doyle, and serves as president of the Falmouth Chamber of Commerce. She continues to illuminate early American history through her art and scholarship.
Lucy Tamburo of Marshfield began volunteering at the Historic Winslow House as a high‐school student and quickly distinguished herself as a knowledgeable and engaging docent. Now a member of the Board of Governors, she contributes to tours, programs, and training while pursuing a degree in history at Boston University.
The Speak for Thyself Awards will be held at the Alden House Historic Site in the new J. Alden & Virginia E. Keyser Center for Living History. For tickets and information, please visit alden.org.
