Space2Inspire Gallery opening with Astronaut-Artist Dr. Sian Proctor
Dr. Sian "Leo" Proctor, the first artist ever chosen to be an astronaut, announces the grand opening of Space2Inspire Gallery at OneOhOne. The gallery opening celebration will take place on Friday, November 8, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM MST in Downtown Mesa.
Dr. Proctor made history as the first Black woman to pilot a spaceship and the first female commercial astronaut to pilot a spacecraft during SpaceX's Inspiration4, a three-day all-civilian orbital mission in 2021. Remarkably, she won her seat to space with a poem, breaking new ground in the intersection of art and space exploration.
A Mesa resident and geoscience professor at Maricopa Community Colleges, Dr. Proctor brings her unique perspective as a noted Afrofuturist artist to this new creative space in Downtown Mesa.
The gallery's inaugural exhibition features "Stay Gold," a striking new collection that draws inspiration from Robert Frost's poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay," Stevie Wonder's song of the same name, and S.E. Hinton's "The Outsiders." Each piece in the collection is hand-drawn, then transformed into one-of-one creations through laser cutting and laser etching, with elegant gold inlay work.
During the opening celebration, visitors can explore Dr. Proctor's exclusive Space2Inspire artwork and merchandise. The artist will be present to sign books and artwork throughout the evening.
