Songs of Love & Social Consciousness Commemorating the Centennial of Martha Schlamme
Helene Williams, Belle Linda Halpern, and Leonard Lehrman together with The Solidarity Singers of the New Jersey Industrial Union Council present songs commemorating the life and work of singer/actress Martha Schlamme (Sept. 25, 1923-Oct. 6, 1985). This is the third concert in a series of programs devoted to her centennial this year, the first with Belle Linda Halpern and the Solidarity Singers, culminating in a People’s Voice Cafe program commemorating Martha’s 100th birthday, September 23rd, at Judson Memorial Theatre in New York City.
Martha Schlamme was an Austrian-American Jewish force of nature, a fighter for social justice, and a performer in 12 languages, specializing in Yiddish, German (with Pete Seeger), French, Spanish, and especially Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Weill, Hanns Eisler, Marc Blitzstein and Leonard Bernstein. After the Austrians; embrace of Hitler in 1938, she went into exile, first to Strasbourg, then London, and then interned on the Isle of Man off the coast of England, where she learned to sing “Songs of Many Lands” which became her career in America. The last 5 years of her life she was a faithful friend, supporter, correspondent, and advisor of Leonard Lehrman. She was also the fervent and devoted teacher of dozens of faithful students, including Belle Linda Halpern.
Leonard and Helene began working together in January 1987 and have performed together 691 times, to date, on concert tours of Holland, France, Germany, Belarus and Russia, as well as Romania, Canada, California, Chicago, Washington D.C., Florida, Wisconsin, New England, Israel, England, and Australia.
