WHY THE NEED?
Over 17,000 Somerset County residents live below the poverty line. The Food Bank Network has been fighting against hunger for four decades, but the sequential blows of the pandemic lockdown, hurricane flooding, and rising food prices have brought things to a crisis point. Relying on unsolicited donations alone no longer meets our growing needs for general food distribution and special programs for schoolchildren, veterans, and others.
We are reaching out now to those who care enough to make a difference in our neighbors’ lives.
Please join us. Even if you cannot attend, all donations welcome.
ABOUT THE FOOD BANK NETWORK
The Food Bank Network of Somerset County receives no public funds and is operated by a small professional staff and group of committed volunteers. We provide free food, personal items, and household supplies to county residents in need directly from our warehouse in Bridgewater and our regular pantries in Bound Brook, Lyons, Manville, North Plainfield, and Somerville. Our special initiatives include:
• The Backpack Program, providing nearly 1,000 meals per week for schoolchildren and preschoolers as young as 3 years old to take home for weekends and summer days.
• Support for veterans and their families through a special pantry located at the Veterans Administration Center in Lyons
• Support for college students through the Raritan Valley Community College pantry
• Mobile outreach to public housing communities in “food deserts”
• The county’s annual Adopt-A-Family Program, providing Thanksgiving meals to families in need
• Support for other independent pantries and state/county social services initiatives
• Many more in the planning stages!
