Smart Road and Sidewalk Salt Use

Please join Friends of Owen Conservation Park for a talk by Allison Madison, program manager for the Wisconsin Salt Wise program, about road salt pollution and reduction solutions. Allison is the first-ever staff person at Wisconsin Salt Wise. Since assuming her role in June 2020, she has spearheaded statewide collaboration around salt reduction. Allison has 10+ years of experience in science and sustainability education in both formal and informal settings from the Appalachian mountains to Olympic National Park, classrooms in inner-city Milwaukee to the ponderosa pine forests of Colorado's Front Range. Allison graduated from St. Olaf College and has a joint MS. in Environment and Resources and Soil Science from the University of Wisconsin. What you will learn about: Once salt goes down, it doesn’t go away. Salt levels are rising in lakes, streams, and drinking water across the state and the country. Harm to native freshwater organisms can occur at both the species and ecosystem levels. Paving the way in smart salting practices is a multi-faceted endeavor. Learn how businesses and public agencies of all sizes are infusing Salt Wise practices into their trainings, policies, operations, and outreach; and hear about policy solutions in other states. Come with your own thoughts and questions as we break down the science of freshwater salinization and build up the case for smarter salting practices.
