The films were selected by independent reporter and documentary photographer Salym Fayad. Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, Fayad has worked extensively in Sub-Saharan Africa covering issues rel​ated to music and popular culture, armed conflict, migration and human rights. He is co-director of MUICA African film festival in Columbia, and co-founder of Fundacion Otro Sur.
