The Appalachian Theatre, Awesome Space, and Toy Sheep are proud to present a FREE screening of two movies from the “Toronto Bizarre” group of young Canadian filmmakers, THE STRAIGHT BALL (2021) and THE ALL GOLDEN (2022), followed by a Zoom Q-and-A with GOLDEN director Nate Wilson and the star of both films, actress Lea Rose Sebastianis!
In the August 3rd edition of the TORONTO STAR, arts reporter Quinn Henderson writes about what they call the “Toronto Bizarre,” a new “explosive underground film scene” where filmmakers share a DIY, zero-budget approach to production (everyone works on each other’s sets) while refusing to make either mainstream narrative movies or over-intellectualized experimental and art films. Henderson notes that these movies “are too creative, the people are too committed, and the vibes are too positive for it to remain a secret for much longer.” We’re spreading the word by bringing two examples of Toronto’s Bizarre to Boone!
In the improvised short film THE STRAIGHT BALL, what begins as a normal boy-girl date quickly gets weird, and hilarious, in ways we wouldn’t dream of spoiling here. And in the feature THE ALL GOLDEN—described by Henderson as “one of the early classics” of the Toronto Bizarre—a injured bike courier named Valerie relies on her boyfriend Gunther for care, which puts stress on their relationship and leads Valerie to, um, discover Nazi gold in Gunther’s closet. What seems like an Hitchcockian set-up, however, immediately blossoms into unstable historical flashbacks, manic stylistic flourishes, and self-referential commentary. Fresh from the Alamo Drafhouse’s 2023 Fantastic Fest and sold-out shows at Brooklyn’s Spectacle microcinema, THE ALL GOLDEN is for viewers who crave something new. The first words to appear in the film are “A Hallmark Channel Original,” but don’t you believe it.
