SCORCHED EARTH: Iowa's Fight Against Factory Farms ft. Austin Frerick

Corporate ag has left a toxic imprint across the landscape here in Iowa. Pollution from this industry has decimated our access to safe drinking water, clean air, and a decent quality of life. But we're fighting back! Join us in Des Moines on Saturday, July 27 for a screening of the documentary "Right to Harm" and a discussion about the fight against corporate consolidation in Iowa with author Austin Frerick. Right to Harm is a powerful documentary that was filmed across the country, chronicling the failures of state agencies to regulate industrial animal agriculture. Known formally as Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), these facilities produce millions of gallons of untreated waste that destroys the quality of life for nearby neighbors. The film shows how impacted residents who are fed up with the lack of regulation band together to demand justice from their legislators. This is a story we know well, and some of the leaders from our movement will be featured on screen! Austin Frerick is an expert on agriculture and antitrust policy born and raised here in Iowa. His new book "Barons: Money, Power, and the Corruption of America’s Food Industry" profiles the rise of corporations that have amassed monopoly power over our food system. This groundbreaking study includes the story of how big agribusiness families use their corrupting influence to buy off the state government to the detriment of the environment—and our communities.
