Moss and lichens grow in every terrestrial biome on earth, serving key roles in each ecosystem. Researchers are still exploring their microscopic world, and discovering surprises along the way. These tiny tufts create habitat, nourish plants and animals and warn us about dangerous air quality. Their lifecycles, anatomy, and ecology will be shared through stories from around the world. You’ll also learn to recognize a few species you might find at home.
Ruth Williams is an ecology enthusiast with degrees in Horticulture and Landscape Architecture from UC Davis in 2004. As a local consulting arborist at Community Forest Solutions, she helps preserve trees for future generations. She developed an appreciation for moss and lichens while botanizing around Portland playgrounds with her twin girls.
