This will be an opportunity to learn about pain. We will consider how information about injury is processed by the nervous system, and how the brain itself controls our experience of pain. We will learn about neural circuits that can cause us to not feel pain even when we are injured, and why we might feel pain even when there is no injury.
Dr. Mary Heinricher is a neuroscientist and pain research who studies neural circuits that control pain. Her work explains how stress, fear, and even our social environment can modulate pain. She is a Professor of Neurological Surgery at OHSU.
