Sands Point Preserve brings Japanese-themed chamber music to Hempstead House in January
The January concert celebrates the Japanese ikigai, a Japanese concept that helps us find purpose and fulfilment with a focus on the reason for living. Ikigai brings listeners to a place where passion, mission, vocation and profession intersect, infusing the afternoon with meaning.
With this series, the Preserve is proud to welcome back duoJalal – the ensemble-in-residence for the Preserve, the Telluride MusicFest and elsewhere. The ensemble is led by Artistic Director Kathryn Lockwood, on viola, with Yousif Sheronick, who brings unique skills as a classical- and world-percussionist. Joining them in January are renowned musicians that include Japanese koto player Yumi Kurosawa, violinists Ilmar Gavilan and Doori Na and cellist Raman Ramakrishnan. Together, they will dive into the traditional and non-traditional sounds of Japan.
Lockwood, who also serves as artistic director of Music@MOMA, will bring a lively Sunday chamber music series for the Preserve throughout 2024. The series includes “A Tour de France” on May 19, “Mother Country” on July 14 and “Romani Reach” on November 10. The concert is part of a curated series comprising music, poetry and dance, inspired by the time of year and themes of romance and resilience.
The concerts are followed by themed receptions – a time to mingle with the artists, friends, and concert-goers.
Tickets are $40 for members of Sands Point Preserve Conservancy; $50 for non-members, and includes parking. Please note that processing fees will be added to credit card charges.
