Boffa says, “I developed my love for the Long Island Sound and all things water related: fishing, boating, swimming and exploring.” So, when walking past a shell shop in Rockport, Massachusetts, something in the window made him stop in his tracks – a sailor’s valentine. “It was beautiful,” he recalls. “I relished the thought I could design some.” Sailors’ Valentines emerged in the mid-1800s. During their time at sea, sailors created these intricate works of art made with shells and octagonal boxes for loved ones back at home. That fateful day in Rockport, Boffa bought one for his mother. Currently, Mercy by the Sea is featuring his masterpieces until July 31. Bill Boffa's "Sailors' Valentines" is on display at the Mercy by the Sea’s Mary C Daly RSM Art Gallery until July 31. Visit Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
