Celebrate the unique people and cultures of Racine with Racine Theatre Guild’s Community Day: Black History Month, in collaboration with Doses of Reality, LLC. on Sunday, February 11 at 2 p.m.
The free, performance based, open-house event will bring together the community and introduce or reintroduce them to RTG and arts throughout the area. The February event features local rappers, singers, a dance group, fashion designer, spoken word, live art, and a band on the RTG stage.
Telling their own unique stories and shining a light on their community as a whole, singers and poets include Ahkil Rutledge-Estese, aka, Dukalion, an emcee, songwriter, leader, free-thinker and love-pusher who uses his talents to connect with audiences. Kennedy Hughes has been growing as a slam poet, weaving captivating storytelling through her talents and creativity. Lashauna Jenae is a local singer who is dedicated to her craft, constantly seeking opportunities to grow and learn as an artist. TDaRealest is an up-and-coming emcee, poised to make waves in the world of hip-hop with his infectious beats, thought-provoking storytelling, and undeniable charisma. DTop uses his lyrics to paint a vivid picture of the struggles and triumphs he has experienced in his life through hip-hop, trap, and soul music. Kavon Cortez Jones has shared his voice through poems, but also has dabbled in plays, stories, songs, drawings, whatever his imagination can put on the page. Deme Godx is known for her powerful lyrical storytelling, addressing societal issues such as racism, poverty, and gender inequality, giving a voice to the voiceless.
Ladies of Virtue, a faith-based community dance team, embodies the belief that moral integrity is essential and that standing up for what is right is non-negotiable. They are dedicated to using dance as a means to inspire, uplift, and spread positivity within our community, transcending barriers and bringing people together, fostering a sense of unity and understanding.
Fashion designer, Kenya Salahuddin (Steward), is the CEO and Senior Lead Designer at KSS Designs and will be presenting her recent creations with their unique and vibrant aesthetic, combining bold prints and colors with clean and tailored silhouettes, to the stage in a short fashion show. By blending traditional African aesthetics with contemporary styles, she creates a fusion of cultures that is both visually striking and culturally significant.
CosmicJam, a local rhythm and blues band, will also be part of the event. Each member brings their unique musical background and influences to the table. Together, they create a tight and powerful sound that transports listeners to the heyday of rhythm and blues, performing energetic and soulful sets.
Event organizer and spoken word artist, Mboya Sharif is the founder and CEO of Doses of Reality, LLC. While this is her first venture into directing and producing, Mboya has already established herself as a successful author with her Baby J Series of books for children. She has tailored the event to celebrate not only Black History, but also the future of Black culture, art, and talent.
Sponsored by The Osborne and Scekic Family Foundation with support from MCU Credit Union, the event is organized by Doses of Reality, LLC and will also feature live art creation, community resources, and backstage tours.
