Activating the first floor of a 19th-century mansion, RISD’s primary gallery, Woods-Gerry, features group exhibitions throughout the academic year. The 2024 Graphic Design Triennial is an exhibit of works produced within RISD’s Graphic Design Department over the last three years. The opening reception of this exhibit is an open-to-all and free event!
The theme of 2024 Graphic Design Triennial is “Expiration Date”. Examining the intersection between graphic design and temporality, “Expiration Date” explores how obsolescence shapes visual communication in a world of constant reproduction and redistribution. In a digital age where designs are endlessly reproduced and redistributed across platforms, the work on display interrogates the fleeting existence of images and messages. From the expiration of trends to the limits of technological compatibility, we hope to explore how visual forms gain, lose, and sometimes regain value over time. “Expiration Date” offers a commentary on how society discards, recycles, or resurrects visual narratives in response to shifting cultural forces. With the capacity to duplicate and disseminate, how do graphic designers navigate authorship when their creations are perpetually recontextualized? In a world where nothing remains static, this exhibition underscores that expiration is not an end, but rather an opportunity for reinvention. This exhibition highlights the inherent tension between graphic design’s promise of timelessness and graphic design after its shelf life.
