Reimagining History: The Artistic Vision and Storytelling of “I Dream”

Author and composer of I Dream, Douglas Tappin, will discuss his vision and storytelling in advance of its concert performance on November 1, 2024. His approach to the topic was grounded in the following questions: • Is it possible we miss the real successes of history and history’s greatest mistakes because we prioritize retelling history in linear formats and through formal educational approaches? • To what extent does I Dream’s immersive, non-linear, non-traditional approach to storytelling reveal important historical experience and overlooked dynamism, dimension, context, cohesion, and truth? About the Speaker: Douglas Tappin has written/composed nine full-length musicals, including I Dream, DIVA, and We, the People. His works have appeared on Atlanta’s Alliance Stage, at the Apollo Theater in NYC, and at Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center. He has collaborated with Greg Phillinganes (musical director for Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson) and Grammy-nominated orchestrator Carl Marsh. He is a proud member of the Dramatists Guild of America. Free to the public with registration. RSVP now.
