As scientists (and politicians) debate the veracity of the Anthropocene, an age of human centered activity that, if declared a new epoch, will forever alter the chemical composition of the rocks and fossils beneath our feet, the climate changes, animals disappear, and shorelines advance. Regardless of nomenclature, the planet is shifting. Smart money says it’s the humans with their cars and coal mines.

SOYLENT GREEN (Richard Fleischer, 1973; 97 min)
SOYLENT GREEN portrays a crumbling world beset with dying oceans, year-round humidity, and worldwide shortages of food, water, and housing. In New York City’s population of 40 million, only the elite can afford spacious apartments, clean water, and natural food in walled-off communities patrolled by armed guards. Released in 1973 and set fifty-three years in the future in 2022, what was once science fiction is now documentary. In one of his most memorable performances, Charlton Heston plays an NYPD detective tasked with investigating the murder of a wealthy and influential board member of the Soylent Corporation. Riveting and also campy, SOYLENT GREEN is an iconic sci-fi classic.
