DONA NOBIS PACEM was written in 1936 for chorus and orchestra. Composed in the wake of the Great War and amidst growing unrest across Europe, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ piece blends the poetry of Walt Whitman and biblical passages in an exploration of humanity's capacity for violence – and humanity’s yearning for peace.
