Rahim AlHaj Trio
Two-time Grammy nominee, National Endowment for The Arts National Heritage Fellow, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings artist and Iraqi oud virtuoso and composer, Rahim Alhaj, is joined by Iranian santour maestro, Sourena Sefati, and world percussion master, Javier Saume-Mazzei, the Rahim AlHaj to perform Alhaj’s intricate compositions, which delicately combine traditional Iraqi maqams with contemporary stylings and influences. The music evokes the experience of exile from AlHaj’s homeland and of new beginnings in his adopted country and his work establishes new concepts without altering the foundation of the traditional “Iraqi School of Oud.” Representing AlHaj’s artistic appeal to each of us to make a positive difference toward a better world, the album brings together Sefati, Saume-Mazzei and AlHaj in the spirit of friendship, tolerance and an acknowledgement that everyone must live in peace under the same sky. NY Music Daily (Live Review) wrote, “Oud Virtuoso Rahim AlHaj Plays the Year’s Single Best Concert at Lincoln Center: The trio followed with a performance that ran the gamut of human emotions: sometimes harrowing, often haunting, but also kinetic and dancing, with a delirious, exhilarating stampede out at the end. ... with elegant harmonies from earth to sky from oud and santoor....
