Poetry Salon with Claire Keyes on Carol Seitchik
On Thursday Jan. 18, the Poetry Salon will open the 2024 season with the poetry of Carol Seitchik of Beverly, MA. A visual artist, Seitchik turned to poetry when health issues intervened. She published "The Distance from Odessa," her first book of poetry, in 2021. The poems touch four generations, three centuries, and cross the ocean twice as they weave the story of the poet's life. Carla Panciera, also a North Shore poet, remarks that Seitchik’s book of poems "invites the reader on a journey both familiar and intensely personal. She recounts one generation's insistence on telling stories that move only forward, to the next generation's insistence on free love and rebellion, to subsequent generations' migration to a land of pomegranates and olives, a land where ‘so much strife wants to be ordinary.’" That land is Israel.
