Poetry Salon with Claire Keyes Featuring Ellen Bass

On Thursday, Oct. 17, the Poetry Salon at Abbot Public Library will focus on contemporary American poet Ellen Bass. After earning her bachelor’s degree, she pursued a master’s degree in creative writing at Boston University, where she studied with Anne Sexton. Widely published, Bass’s poems have appeared in journals and anthologies including the New Yorker, the American Poetry Review and Kenyon Review. In an interview, Bass states, “I always wanted to write poetry because poetry is really where my heart is. It’s my way of life, and my way of grappling with my experience and my way of paying attention, my way of giving thanks, my way of being outraged—my way of living in the world.” Among Bass’s books are “Indigo” (2020), which was a finalist for the Paterson Poetry Prize; and “Like a Beggar” (2014), which won the Milt Kessler Poetry Award, the Lambda Literary Award and the Northern California Book Award. Bass has taught poetry at the MFA program at Pacific University in Oregon since 2007 and founded poetry programs for prison inmates. She is Chancellor Emerita of the Academy of American Poets. Please join Claire Keyes, Professor Emerita at SSU, for a reading and discussion of Bass’s poems in person or via Zoom. Registration is required to attend in person or via Zoom - please register at tinyurl.com/Ellen-Bass-Salon. This program is sponsored by the Friends of Abbot Public Library.
