HCC Art Galleries highlight Tampa Bay area poets and photographers in a special event at Gallery114@HCC Ybor.
On November 7, at 5 p.m., poets Piper Harrow, Stephen Lindow, and St. Pete Poet Laureate Gloria Muñoz respond to artworks in HCC Art Galleries' “Photographic Tableaux | Fabricated Realities" exhibition at Gallery114@HCC Ybor.
“Photographic Tableaux | Fabricated Realities” presents fine art photography by Central Florida artists Jaime Aelavanthara, Thomas Whitworth, and Suzanne Camp Crosby. Aelavanthara, Whitworth and Crosby are/were masters of the photographic tableau—arranging characters in an interesting setting to create scenes that could be real but aren’t.
HCC Art Gallery Director Amanda Poss and Photography Instructor Chris Weeks co-curated the exhibition to expose HCC students to good examples of traditional, straight photography without all the digital post-processing and AI.
“You can do really interesting things that aren’t just reality as you see it in front of the lens without a computer or digital manipulation afterward,” says Gallery Director Amanda Poss.
All three of the Central Florida photographers whose work is showcased in “Photographic Tableaux | Fabricated Realities” either are or were Professors of Photography at various educational institutions.
Aelevanthara, who teaches at the University of Tampa, places herself in her photography as a character. While still a grad student, she dressed as Bigfoot and photographed herself outside of her Louisiana apartment complex. More recently, she’s portrayed herself as a feral woman roaming the state of Florida.
Whitworth creates scenes from HO scale model railroad figures he purchases off eBay. In Whitworth’s hands, the inch-high figures become actors on set, arranged into catastrophic still lifes meant to be both amusing and troubling.
HCC Professor Emeritus Suzanne Camp Crosby often added unexpected items, like paper dolls, into everyday scenes when creating her thematically directed photographs.
Each image in “Photographic Tableax | Fabricated Reality” tells a story. See what local writers Harrow, Lindow and Muñoz make of them at this free event.
