Pittsburgh Philharmonic presents "A Pilgrim's Progress"

The Pittsburgh Philharmonic’s season continues with A Pilgrim’s Progress, an inspiring program exploring journeys of aspiration, struggle, and redemption. The concert opens with a bold new work by Jake Pieszak, winner of the orchestra’s Young Composer Contest. Cellist Albert Dong then takes center stage for the passionate drama and virtuosic lyricism of Saint-Saëns’s Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor. The program culminates in Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Symphony No. 5 in D major. Composed during World War II and drawing on material from the composer’s opera based on John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress, this radiant work features modal melodies, hymn-like allusions (including echoes of “For All the Saints” and “All Creatures of Our God and King”), and a profound sense of spiritual consolation. From youthful energy and dramatic intensity to quiet strength and transcendent hope, this afternoon offers a powerful musical pilgrimage. Tickets and information: www.pghphil.org
