Rotary members in Green Bay are marking progress toward a polio-free world while helping to end the paralyzing disease Pints for Polio at Badger State Brewery is among many to be held by Rotary clubs around the world in honor of World Polio Day, 24 October Green Bay, WI — Rotary members of Green Bay West Rotary Club are taking action in honor of World Polio Day to raise awareness, funds, and support to end polio, a vaccine-preventable disease that still threatens children in parts of the world today. On October 24, Badger State Brewery and Green Bay West Rotary Club are holding a Pints for Polio event 2-10pm at Badger State Brewery, 990 Tony Canadeo Run, Green Bay, in support of World Polio Day/polio eradication. A portion of beer sales will be donated to The World Polio Organization and matched the Gates Foundation. Additionally, information about the eradication of polio and Green Bay West Rotary will be holding a 50/50 Raffle with winner announced at 9pm. “We’re excited to help raise funds and awareness for the eradication of polio in a way that our community enjoys” said Taproom Manager Cora Hansen. Wild poliovirus cases have decreased by over 99% since 1988, from an estimated 350 000 cases in more than 125 endemic countries to 12 reported cases in 2023. Of the 3 strains of wild poliovirus (type 1, type 2 and type 3), wild poliovirus type 2 was eradicated in 1999 and wild poliovirus type 3 was eradicated in 2020. As at 2024, endemic wild poliovirus type 1 remains in two countries: Pakistan and Afghanistan. Polio anywhere is a threat everywhere, and Rotary members from Green Bay West who meet at NWTC Tuesday mornings 7:30 am. have long worked to end the paralyzing virus, which will be only the second human disease ever to be eradicated. Rotary has contributed more than US$2.7 billion to fight polio and countless volunteer hours since launching its PolioPlus program in 1985. In 1988, Rotary joined in partnership with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to form the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The Gates Foundation and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, later joined. When the initiative launched, there were 350,000 cases of polio every year. Today, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9%. To sustain this progress and continue to reach every child with the polio vaccine, Rotary has committed to raising US$50 million each year to support global polio eradication efforts. The Gates Foundation has pledged to match that 2-to-1 for a total yearly contribution of US$150 million. About Rotary Rotary brings together a global network of community leaders dedicated to tackling the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. We connect 1.4 million members from more than 46,000 Rotary clubs across the world. Their service improves lives both locally and internationally, from helping those in need in their own communities to working toward a polio-free world.
