Pianist Carolyn Enger: American Ethos

In celebration of America's 250th birthday, American Ethos introduces the audience to composers of a variety of backgrounds reminding us of the unique spirit of America and the different cultures that make up our nation. Ms. Enger’s program shines a light on diverse voices, who are often overlooked, and American composers of our time. Program includes selections from composers such as Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Craig Urquhart, Daron Hagen, John Corigliano, Margaret Bonds, Florence Price, Ned Rorem, Meredith Monk, Margaret Ruthven Lang, Robert Sirota and William Grant Still. Carolyn Enger poses the question of how to characterise American composition over so many years and throughout times of such sharp division. How can a musical 'Ethos' be encompassed in all its various styles, sentiments, and beliefs? "I wanted to have a broad feeling of Americana," Enger explains: "Voices that have been overlooked over the years then come to light because they influenced voices that we're very familiar with." This concert is sponsored by The Friends of the Englewood Library.
