This Event has Passed
This event is free and open to the public. Sue Peri—better known as Sue Cockrell to Davis Enterprise readers—became interested in photography as a teenager in Walnut Creek, where she and her brother Paul spent countless hours working in a garage darkroom listening to music with friends as they developed prints.
Sue pursued her interest in photography through journalism classes at Diablo Valley College and joining the staff of the California Aggie when she transferred to UC Davis. Later in her undergraduate career, she also worked for the UC Davis Alumni Association.
Sue continued as photo editor of the Aggie after graduation and then working as a photographer at the Davis Daily Democrat. In early 1982, she and Don moved to southern California where Sue took photography classes at California State University at Long Beach. She also spent a summer as a photography intern at the Los Angeles Times.
Northern California beckoned and she returned to the Bay Area and a variety of photo-related jobs at newspapers there. When they moved to Davis, Sue enrolled in a teaching credential program at Sacramento State University. She earned her credential, did some substitute teaching, did some part-time work for the Daily Democrat in Woodland, bought a house, and started a family. With a baby girl in a car seat, Sue began taking real estate photos for the Davis Enterprise one day a week. Another daughter arrived, and after a suitable interval, Sue returned to the Enterprise still in a part-time capacity. Gradually she became a staff photographer and covered a wide variety of assignments. As one of three photographers at the Enterprise, her morning shift tended to deal with school and university activities. Occasionally she took sports, court cases, promotional and advertising photos.
After leaving the Enterprise in 2017 Sue worked as a freelance photographer for Communicare Health Center and the City of Davis Healthy Davis Together program. Currently, she focuses on nature photography and volunteers her time and photography with Thriving Pink, a Breast Cancer support group.
