Yao Kahlil Newkirk will present on Peyton Harris, a formerly enslaved man from Virginia who settled in Buffalo in 1833 and went on to become a successful businessman and civic leader. Harris operated canal boats on the Erie Canal and was instrumental in the development of the Michigan Street Baptist Church. As a living descendant, Newkirk will share both the history and legacy of Harris’s contributions to Buffalo’s growth and the broader pursuit of justice and equality.
Presenter Yao Kahlil Newkirk is a multidisciplinary artist, scholar, poet, and professional keynote speaker whose work lies at the intersection of performance, racial trauma, and Black cultural expression. He holds a BA and MA in Theatre Performance and a Ph.D. in Africana & American Studies from the University at Buffalo.
This lecture will take place at Central Library in the Collections Gallery Conference Room on the 2nd floor.
