Performances of Big Fish the Musical

Glendale, AZ, March 4th Mountain Ridge High School’s Theatre program is performing Big Fish, a musical adaptation of the Daniel Wallace novel and cult Tim Burton film. The story follows Edward Bloom and his son, Will Bloom, as the two try to reconcile in the final months of Edward’s life. Throughout Will’s childhood, his father was absent and told tall tales about his exploits, involving giants, mermaids, and even werewolves—all as a way to cope with his life as a travelling salesman. After Will finds out his father has cancer, the two try to make amends before his father’s passing. The MRHS Theatre program is unique in that almost everything is student-made and student-run. Every set piece, light cue, and piece of choreography is all done by the school’s passionate students. The program, which has graduated a multitude of theatre professionals, specializes in allowing students the opportunity to grow their skills naturally through the real show process seen in professional environments. This type of department is rare in high school theatre, especially when taking into consideration its sheer size. Most productions put upwards of 50 actors on stage and a similar number of technicians backstage—an unheard of number of participants in a youth theatre setting. Ridge Theatre also makes a point of sharing its love of the art and of education with neighboring schools and programs. Their director, Laura Nardone, has been with the district for 25 years, and for the past two, has also hosted drama clinics for youth interested in the performing arts with the help of other high schools in the area. Similarly, they participate in state- and national-level theatre organizations. The story of Big Fish itself explores relevant themes of truth, family, and parenthood, all while exploring a fantastical world and raising the question of what even is reality?
