A 'Downton Abbey' Back Story: Aristocratic Anxiety and Class in Britain in the Early Twentieth Century: This talk will examine the historical context around which the stories in the television drama 'Downton Abbey' revolve. The aristocracy, unchallenged rulers of Britain for centuries, faced a variety of challenges to their lifestyle, power and position in the first decades of the twentieth century. We will consider economic changes, transformations in government, tax policies and the impact of working-class politics, all part of the shifting landscape which the fictional Crawley family navigate in the popular show.
