With her husband away at war, Pearl finds herself dreaming of a way to escape from her boring life on the farm. She sees the silver screen as her way to find stardom and the love she so desperately needs, but her overbearing mother and her own dark impulses might hold her back from the fame she craves. PEARL proves to be a delightfully perverse study on a standout character from writer/director Ti West’s tribute to ‘70s grindhouse, X. Its vibrant, candy-coated veneer plays wonderfully against the depraved desires of the main character bubbling just below the surface. Co-writer/star Mia Goth gives another deliciously unhinged performance as Pearl, a not-quite-innocent farm girl looking for love in all the wrong places. As much a love letter to the Golden Age of Hollywood as it is a demented look at the darkness bubbling just below the surface of rural America, PEARL is colorful, unnerving, and twisted in all the right ways.
