Pascua Yaqui History
Join Tribal Councilman Francisco Munoz as he shares the history of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe. Based in Tucson, the Pascua Yaqui Tribe is the only federally recognized Yaqui tribe in the United States, with more than 13,000 citizens. The Yaqui call themselves Hiaki or Yoeme, the Yaqui word for person, and refer to their homeland as Hiakim. They may also describe themselves as Hiaki Nation or Pascua Hiaki, meaning “The Easter People,” as many people converted to Catholicism under Jesuit influence in colonial Mexico. Many folk etymologies account for how the Yoeme came to be known as the “Yaqui.” Francisco will also share how the Pascua Yaqui tribe got its federal recognition and its current 202-acre reservation in 1978.
An enrolled member of the Pascua Yaqui tribe, lecturer Francisco Munoz is currently serving his fifth term as an elected official on the Yaqui Tribal Council. Born in Phoenix, Francisco moved to Tucson in his last year in middle school. His father was born in Phoenix his mother in Guadalupe, Arizona. Married and the proud father of two daughters, he worked for the tribe and its casino before joining the Council.
