G.W. Pabst, Weimar master and discoverer of Greta Garbo, was at his creative and artistic peak in 1929, which year saw release of two films he directing that starred native Kansan Louise Brooks. October 1929’s The Diary of a Lost Girl is dreary and terrific, but the much more sensationalistic melodrama Pandora’s Box, released in January 1929, stands as one of the greatest of all silent films. Here Brooks’ mostly-innocent showgirl Lulu brings to heel all who come into contact with her.
