Service in the Church at 10:00 a.m. Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, the center of the religious and cultural life of the people of Israel. We enter the church with palm branches, waving them like the crowds that lined the route of Jesus’s entrance into Jerusalem, as a sign of welcome. We also commemorate the beginning of the events of Jesus’ passion. The readings reflect Jesus' entry, with its celebratory tone, as well as the later events of the week through his 'last supper' on Maundy Thursday, and crucifixion and burial on Friday. The emphasis at the beginning of the service is on the triumphal entry — honoring Jesus as a spiritual teacher, prophet, and healer, and it shifts to include a more somber tone as we recall the unfolding story of Jesus' passion.
