On a summer trip from the Midwest to the West Coast, Madeline Barrett of Phoenix, AZ, was astounded by the rock formations in Badlands National Park in South Dakota and the geological formations at Devil Towers in Wyoming. “The spirit of nature created all these natural wonders, and inspired me to write ‘Moonrise, Sunrise’ celebrating the Earth’s breathtaking beauty,” she said.
When Oliver Dubon of Palmyra, VA moved to Houston, he experienced his first hurricane, “Beryl.” Researching the word hurricane he came across the term monsoon. Traditionally it is a seasonal reversing wind accompanied by changes in precipitation - a dry season and a rainy season. His piece, “Monsoon,” is a meditation on seasonal changes in the physical world, but also the changes we humans experience over the course of our lifetime.
Composer and concert pianist Gavin Sol Goodrich of Homer, Alaska, a small fishing village, taught himself piano, composition and mathematics from YouTube videos before receiving a scholarship to Columbia University, where he graduated with honors. His compositions such as “Salve Regina” synthesize pure mathematics, Vipassana Meditation, and visual arts.
Los Angeles based Asian American composer Feona Jones who hails from Pleasant Hill, CA creates evocative soundscapes such as “The Eternal Sky” that delves into themes of trauma, introspection and storytelling. Drawing from historical injustices, Feona aims to use her music as a vehicle for healing, processing trauma, fostering forgiveness, and amplifying marginalized voices.
Chinese American composer and pianist Sum Yee Lee was raised in Seattle, WA and Guangzhou, China. Her works, such as “The Spirit of Nature,” are characterized by spontaneous changes in dynamics, color, characters and textures. She has been featured in festivals such as She Scores Concert Series, MOXsonic, SPLICE Institute and Wintergreen Music Festival.
“Dream American” is made possible by many generous donors and especially by Dr. Susan F. DuPree whose lead gift is dedicated to Hollis Hutchinson Bascom in Memoriam.
PCO Music Director Lawrence Kohl has performed to critical acclaim in San Francisco, Walnut Creek, Napa, Livermore and Lafayette. The San Francisco Chronicle wrote, “An electrifying performance. Kohl’s avid direction gave the music just the right blend of public rhetoric and intimate delicacy.” PCO’s educational programs introduce classical music to 6,000 elementary school children each year and provides clinics for middle and high school music ensembles.
