Out in Paradise – Screening and Talk Story
Lei Pua ʻAla Queer Histories of Hawaiʻi and the Hawaiʻi LGBT Legacy Foundation's Queer Women Initiative announce a special screening of Out In Paradise, a groundbreaking documentary about the diversity of lesbian and gay life in Hawaiʻi in 1993. Produced by Sara Banks and Kate Sample, the award-winning film explores the lives of over 30 brave women as they discuss coming out, family, work and culture. With humor and candor, these women share the perplexity of living authentically in an island culture that for the most part preferred they stay in the closet..
The event, which is a kickoff for this year’s Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival, is aimed at using the magic of cinema to bring people together to honor and find inspiration in the stories of those who overcame the challenges and prejudices of their time.
