Join Georgetown University Art Galleries on Friday, September 19th from 6-8 pm for an Opening Reception to celebrate our Fall 2025 exhibitions: McArthur Binion: Notes on Form (Intimate Structures) and Lorraine O’Grady: Miscegenated Family Album. Enjoy live music and light refreshments. This event is free and open to the public, but space is limited.
McArthur Binion: Notes on Form (Intimate Structures) is curated by Georgetown University Director & Chief Curator Jaynelle Hazard for the Maria & Alberto de la Cruz Art Gallery. The exhibition explores McArthur Binion’s work from 2009 to the present, highlighting his ongoing use of form, shape, and a very personal language of abstraction. Referring to each work as a self-portrait, Binion layers oil stick and ink in hatched lines of a grid, on top of his personal memorabilia such as birth certificates, photographs, address book pages, and images of his childhood home. Each canvas becomes an extension of the “under conscious,” a term he uses to describe these embedded personal histories.
Lorraine O’Grady: Miscegenated Family Album is guest curated by Donna Honarpisheh, Associate Curator at ICA Miami, for presentation in the Lucille M. & Richard F.X. Spagnuolo Art Gallery. The artist juxtaposes photographs of ancient Egyptian queen Nefertiti with images of her older sister, Devonia Evangeline O’Grady Allen, and members of their respective families. Selected from a 1980 performance in which 65 pairs of images were projected behind the artist, the diptychs draw striking parallels between the two women, including their husbands and children, mixed-race backgrounds, and estranged relationships with their sisters.
