Since opening in 2016, Literati Press bookshop has brought the written word to the Paseo. As part of their recent expansion, they’ve launched the Writers Co-Op to provide workshops and a co-working space for writers to refine their skills, develop community, and build their careers.
“We want attendees to walk away with something tangible,” said creative director Charles J. Martin. “Not just a piece of writing or a new technique but also connections with the local writing community. Knowing who your people are—and who you can reach out to if you need some advice—is critical to growing as a writer and finding opportunities to practice and get paid for your craft.”
In addition to the Writers Co-Op, Literati Press is also offering public facing workshops, with recent offerings on overcoming writer’s block and strengthening sensory details, a Comic Book Intensive with local celebrity Jerry Bennett and a generative writing workshop with American Pushcart-Prize nominated poet and novelist, Cassie Premo Steele (Beaver Girl).
“Connecting people has always been our real mission,” said Charles. “We’ve given several local authors and artists their first credits by including them in projects such as Literati Presents.” Literati has also helped launch projects that ended up having significant reach—including James Cooper’s Moonlit Massacre, Steven Paul Judd’s Rez Detectives, and Natasha Alterici’s Heathen, a graphic novel that is currently in preproduction as a film by Catherine Hardwicke (director of Thirteen and Twilight).
Which, according to Martin, has been important to the entire project. “The mantra of both the bookshop, publishing company, and the Writers Co-Op is: ‘Good writers write—great writers read.’ It’s all an ecosystem of creativity which, we hope, will amplify the voices of the metro’s literary community to reach across the country. Heck, let’s shoot for across the world too.”
