RAGS is a brilliant, heart-warming, and timely musical about Russian Jews fleeing for their lives from the murderous Russian Cossacks to NYC's lower east side in the early 1900s. With nothing but the rags on their backs. There they became the backbone of America's rags (garment) industry. The plot is frighteningly similar to today's horrifying war in Ukraine. The musical score of RAGS includes ragtime, Broadway, blues, Jewish and Irish and Italian melodies, patriotic (4th of July), klezmer, and jazz. It is beautiful, romantic, funny, and life-affirming. The book is by Joseph Stein (Fiddler on the Roof), music by Charles Strouse (Bye Bye Birdie, Annie), lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Wicked).
