Seattle University's RoundGlass India Center, in partnership with Elliott Bay Book Company, hosts a special evening with writer Prachi Gupta, moderated by inclusion strategist Ruchika Tulshyan (Inclusion on Purpose). Gupta's debut memoir They Called Us Exceptional has been described as one of the best books of 2023 by The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, Bustle.
This event is free to the public and registration is required. Space is limited. Please RSVP here.
In They Called Us Exceptional, Gupta articulates the dissonance, shame, and isolation of being upheld as an American success story while privately navigating traumas invisible to the outside world. How do we understand ourselves when the story about who we are supposed to be is stronger than our sense of self? What do we stand to gain—and lose—by taking control of our narrative? These questions propel Gupta’s heartfelt memoir and can feel particularly fraught for immigrants and their children who live under immense pressure to belong in America.
Prachi Gupta was a senior reporter at Jezebel and co-host of Jezebel's former politics podcast, Big Time Dicks. She won a 2020 Writers Guild Award for her investigative essay, "Stories About My Brother," which was also named one of the best essays of 2019 by Longform and Longreads. Prior to Jezebel, Prachi covered the 2016 election for Cosmopolitan.com. She has also written for the Atlantic, the Washington Post Magazine, Salon, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar. Her reporting on data privacy and discrimination for Marie Claire was included in 2021's Best American Magazine Writing.
Ruchika Tulshyan, an award-winning inclusion strategist and speaker, is CEO and founder of Candour, which works with organizations to create diverse teams and inclusive cultures. A former business journalist, she has reported from four countries and writes regularly on inclusive leadership for the Harvard Business Review. She was named to the Thinkers50 list, a global ranking described by the Financial Times as “the Oscars of management thinking.”
