Observe Juneteenth at Windsor Historical Society
Gather around the fire at Windsor Historical Society on June 19th at 7:30 pm to observe Juneteenth. On grounds once walked by people enslaved in Windsor, share in an audience-led reading of Venture Smith’s personal account of his life of slavery and freedom in 19th-century Connecticut.
Venture Smith was named Broteer when he was born circa 1730, in West Africa. As a child, he was taken captive and sold into slavery in America. For 25 years, he worked, enslaved, on farms in Connecticut, New York, and Rhode Island. In 1775, Smith bought his freedom. He then strove for the next decade to purchase the freedom of his wife and three children, reuniting his family and building a home in Haddam Neck, CT. Venture Smith’s story exemplifies the themes of slavery and freedom that lie at the heart of Juneteenth, a day of celebration, but also a day of remembrance.
