Nova Linea Musica JACK Quartet: Solare and Celare
Nova Linea Musica (NLM), an innovative chamber music series and new-music incubator, launches its 2026-27 season with a performance by twice GRAMMY nominated JACK Quartet. One of the best-known new-music string quartets in the world, JACK will present a program of music all from the past decade bookended by Turkish composer Cenk Ergün’s beautifully contrasting works Sonare and Celare. The program will also feature the world premiere of an NLM-commissioned work Dahlia by Guggenheim Fellow composer Juri Seo. JACK Quartet: Sonare and Celare is one night only, Wednesday, September 30 at 6:30 PM at Guarneri Hall, 11 E. Adams St. Tickets are $50 with a limited number of $10 student tickets available. Like all NLM events, the performance will be followed by a moderated Q&A with the performers and commissioned composer before the audience and artists are treated to an elegant catered reception. Written for JACK in 2015–16, Sonare and Celare stand in deliberate opposition: Sonare is dense, vigorous, and rhythmically alive; Celare is soft, sustained, and ethereal. Together they explore Ergün's interest in just intonation, microtonality, and Turkish modal music, opening a sonic world the audience is invited to inhabit on either side of the program. Between them sit two works that extend the evening's experimental arc: Keir GoGwilt’s Treatise on Limited Freedoms: Future Mode I (2024), by the violinist-composer who is a frequent JACK collaborator, and Escape Rites (2024), the title work from JACK violinist Austin Wulliman's own recent album.
At the heart of the evening is the world premiere of a new quartet by Juri Seo,a Korean-American composer and pianist on the Princeton faculty, whose music moves with rigor and lyricism across an unusually wide stylistic range. Seo’s work Dahlia is in the style of a Sarabande, a form derived from a 16th century Spanish dance with Arab influence in triple meter and represents the petals and leaves of a dahlia flower. The commission continues NLM's mission to resource the creation of new chamber music and bring composers, performers, and listeners into the same room.
