Nomad Session's unique sound - refreshing, energetic wind ensemble
Del Valle Fine Arts presents San Francisco’s premier wind collective, Nomad Session, on Saturday March 23 at 7:30 pm in the Bankhead Theater. This refreshing, energetic wind ensemble includes every member of the wind and brass family -- flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone and tuba. The fascinating sound created by this unique grouping has inspired an exciting array of new compositions and arrangements.
Selected pieces will showcase Nomad Session's unique sound. An example, Splinter consists of short movements, each named for a kind of tree, "The different lines of the instruments themselves fit together likes pieces of a puzzle. Together they form the overall tapestry of sound by each supplying a branch, or leaf, to the overall musical tree." -- Composer Marc Mellits. Another piece, Percy Grainger’s “musical wildflowers” beloved suite of English folk songs, Lincolnshire Posy, has been standard wind band repertoire since its 1937 premiere.
In keeping with its name, Nomad Session started a series of Pop-Up Outreach Concerts where these musicians “wander” around local parks in order to bring music to the community. Drawing large audiences throughout the Bay Area, recent pop-up performances have taken place in Golden Gate Park, Lake Merritt, Winter Walk SF in Union Square, Dolores Park, Bernal Heights, Castro Art Walk, and at the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival.
