Naperville Chorus Presents “A German Requiem” by Johannes Brahms

This German Requiem, composed shorting after the death of Brahms' mother, contrasts with earlier requiems by focusing on the living, with a theme of the transition from anxiety to comfort. It is an uplifting exploration of spirituality and is one of the greatest choral masterpieces of all time. The Chorus is directed by Interim Conductor, Dr. Peter Jarjisian and Assistant Director Jon Warfel. Dr. Jarjisan is retired from Ohio University (Athens, OH) where he was Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies for 30 years, and currently serves as Chancel Choir Director at Grace United Methodist Church in Naperville. The German Requiem is one of Jarjisian’s favorite masterworks. He has prepared it for six performances, 4 times as a chorus member, and twice as a conductor. The Naperville Chorus was founded in 1976 and draws its members from Naperville and the greater Chicagoland area. The Chorus has a wide repertoire, with a focus on classic choral works, often including elements of gospel, jazz, Broadway, and other genres. Since 2008, the Wentz Concert Hall and Fine Arts Center has been the chorus’s performance home. Performances are made possible in part by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council.
