Skillfully helmed by Allen Barton MY DAD’S KID slowly but surely introduces us to two people with vastly different world views who are thrown together unexpectedly and must sink or swim. Just as slowly their challenges bubble to the surface. The ambitious and assertive Pamela had to leave New York quickly after an ill-considered affair with her boss and Greg can’t surmount a massive writer’s bloc – or even pay his rent. Both have to question their abilities and goals as the real world shoves each into a corner. Together. Kudos to Toms and Barton who do an excellent job of gradually letting us into their insular world and getting us to care about these lonely and messed-up people as they learn how to cope with each other and their own problems. MY DAD’S KID is a powerful piece by a first-time playwright. Eric Toms is an author to follow – and he can act too.
