Upcoming: Serenades & Suites
Beethoven Serenade Op.25
Scored for flute, violin, and viola; completed in 1801. Six movements each with a lively, unique character. Written for his friend Giovanni Cappi, an aspiring music publisher who knew a chamber work by Beethoven would boost sales.
Quincy Porter (1897-1966) Suite in E
Composed in Paris in 1928. This “Little Trio” (altenate title) consists of 4 elegant and distinctly American movements. Hymn-like, introspective moments contrasted with impossibly light, flitting dances. Perfect for a Summer sound scape.
Max Reger (1873-1916) Serenade Op. 141a
Composed in 1915 (later reworked for 2 violins & viola and given the Opus number of 141b), this three movement Serenade exhibits Reger’s disciplined North German seriousness. It is, however, a work of intense color and character when played with sensitivity. Those familiar with his works for organ will find a delicate transparency in this introspective and lively trio.
