Join us for our final concert of the season, featuring Emma Logan's Mother Eve and mezzo-soprano Kindra Scharich.
With words by P. Smith, Mother Eve takes the character of Eve from the biblical creation myth and uses her as a kind of eternal icon, from the first false promise of paradise to all of humanity's false promises that follow, witnessing the overwhelming and bitter heft of human history in a single bite of fruit. Inspired by a variety of sources, from the macabre cabaret of Kurt Weill to the quiet contemplation of medieval chant, Emma Logan creates an expansive, textural, and lived-in sound world befitting of the poetic landscape evoked in the text.
Complementing this sonic landscape, the rest of the program is full of life and light. Taking inspiration from electronic processing, Emma O'Halloran's piano trio Vertical Fields treats the resonance of the piano as a portal that allows the string textures to transform over time, through different atmospheric densities and into vertical fields of thin and thick air. In Light, Smoke, and Siren Glow of Mist, Josiah Tayag Catalan's uses flute and viola to evoke Barbara Jane Reyes' poem “The True Color of the Sea.” On a lighter subject, the unrelenting groove of Cole Reyes' Dot Plot is an homage to the many frustrations endured during statistics classes, using a scatterplot (or dot plot) as inspiration.
As always: good music and good snacks.
