Quarstein, director emeritus of the USS Monitor Center, will present the multifaceted history of USS Monitor, and the program will be in person and livestream from the Explorers Theater at the Museum. Attendees are welcome to send comments or questions to John, and he will answer them following his talk. Advance registration is required whether you attend this event in person or online. About the presentation: Samuel Dana Greene was executive officer of USS Monitor. His leadership helped to save the ironclad from sinking during Monitor’s trip to Hampton Roads, and he commanded the turret during Monitor’s showdown with CSS Virginia. When the Union ironclad’s commander, Lt. John Worden, was wounded, Greene took command of Monitor and maintained a defensive position to save the Union fleet in Hampton Roads on March 9, 1862.
