Mindful Mending: A Sashiko Workshop

In this two-hour workshop, you'll learn foundational Sashiko techniques using reclaimed denim patches printed with wash-away templates — so you can focus on the stitching and leave with a beautiful, finished sample. Whether you're brand new to hand stitching or looking to deepen your mending practice, this class is designed to give you both the skills and the confidence to keep going at home. Merica brings a warm, experienced teaching style to everything she does. With a studio in Brooklyn focused on denim repair and reweave-style alterations, she has taught hand stitching workshops at Materials for the Arts in New York City and is passionate about making visible mending accessible to everyone. All materials are provided, including reclaimed denim patches, proper Sashiko thread, and Sashiko thimbles — everything you need for a strong, satisfying first experience with the technique. Come ready to slow down, stitch something meaningful, and leave with a new skill (and a patch you made yourself). Learn more about Merica Lee: https://www.instagram.com/mericalee/ Sashiko Hand Stitching & Visible Mending Sashiko is a centuries-old Japanese stitching practice that originated as a way to repair, reinforce, and extend the life of clothing. Using simple running stitches, worn garments were strengthened rather than discarded, and over time these functional repairs developed into recognizable geometric patterns. This workshop uses traditional Sashiko stitch patterns to introduce basic hand-sewing and visible mending, with an emphasis on foundational stitching skills. Acknowledgment The stitch patterns used in this workshop are traditional Sashiko designs originating in Japan. We acknowledge their cultural roots and share them here respectfully as a way to teach foundational hand-sewing and repair skills.
